Day 9 - Item 1

From author Debra Driza: a critique of your full manuscript + query. Afterwards - once you've had the time to revise, say - her agent Taylor Martindale will read the full and give her feedback!

Debra Driza lives and writes in Southern California, usually surrounded by Rhodesian Ridgebacks, kids, and her husband--all of them just as messy as she is. She's a member of the group blog GotYA and a die-hard Veronica Mars fan.

MILA 2.0, the first book in her YA sci-fi thriller series, debuts Fall 2012 from Katherine Tegen Books (an imprint of HarperCollins).

Her agent Taylor Martindale also lives and works in Southern California--in fact, Debra is thinking about sending the kids and Ridgebacks to her house for a while. Taylor is an agent with the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency. Her main interest is young adult, but she's also interested in children's picture books, commercial fiction, women's fiction, and multi-cultural fiction.

OMG!!!!! Deb, you gave me a full ms crit already, but I would love the opportunity to have Taylor read my ms since she is closed to unsolicited queries!!!!! Oh, crap. Just saw someone bid $200. I'm out. :-( Great contest! Wish I were a rich struggling artist. drats. foiled by money again. Good luck!!!

@Melenie - ha! I am so not rich, this is all my mad money. I also am bidding on this to get a "pro" look at my MG manuscript, and maybe agent feedback on if this has a shot at formal publishing. Good luck to you - from a not so rich also struggling artist

Debra Driza said...

Hi everyone--

Just wanted to clear a few things up. I talked to Taylor, and she will definitely give the winner feedback on the manuscript, so yay! Also--she's not closed to unsolicited queries, so that must be a misunderstanding?

Thanks SO MUCH for the bids so far! :D

(Debra)

Marieke said...

Thanks for that Debra! :D

Melanie said...

@Jw...sorry, so did not mean to imply that i was under the assumption you are rich. just wish i had that kind of money to play with. I'm so psyched that you have some mad money to play with! That rocks and I wish you the best, best of luck. I've been very luck to already have had Deb as a BETA reader, so it really isn't fair for me to even enter this contest :-)

Deb, please give my apologies to Taylor for posting that misinformation. I totally misread the site and now realize it is Sandra who is not accepting unsolicited queries and not the entire agency. Guess I can go ahead and try my luck after all. :-)

Is the bidding open to commercial adult fiction as well, or preferably YA?

Debra Driza said...

Ara---yes, we're open to commercial adult fiction--thanks for asking! :)

Thank you, Debra.

In which case:
$250

Wow! ok It's not out of my range. It would have been fun as I have a woman's fiction ready to send to query.
So do you need any more donations?
I have a children's non fiction picture book called Earthquake and I would be happy to donate copies.. Here is the website http://www.earthquake-book.com/
(If nothing else, go to the activities tab and see the visual for the difference between a 3.1 and a 9.0 quake. Let me know if you want to auction copies.

Marieke said...

You're welcome to bid! ;-)

Susan, if you could send us a mail about the earthquake book through the address in the upper right corner, that'd be fab! Thanks!

LMT said...

Hi Debra,

Are you open to Middle Grade?

Thanks.

Debra Driza said...

Hi LMT--I just checked with Taylor, and yes, we'd both be happy to read/crit MG. It's not listed on her interests but Taylor is definitely open to representing select MG as well. :)

Thanks for checking!

Deb

Hi Debra, would we be able to postpone the critique if our MS wasn't ready yet? Thanks!

Kandice said...

I don't know! Am biting my nails here, too.

Marie Rearden said...

Waiting is the worst torture, huh?

For the record, if $700 takes it and Ms. Driza and Ms. Martindale have the time/want to double the offer, I'll match.

So much fun! Kandice = Awesome. Escape Artist = loved the play by play. Thanks again.

Kandice said...

Yes, it is the worst. It was fun, Marie! Escape Artist, thanks for joining us in the bidding circus.

Write Life said...

Ah. I had fun. I was considering jumping in myself, but I've got major rep footy fees to pay...but it was fun stirring you two up some. Not that you needed any stirring or prodding. I'm just glad it timed out. I hate to think what might have happened with another five minutes!
Anyway, perhaps another for the crit group?

Marieke said...

You guys! You're amazing! And to put you out your suffering... $700 takes it, perfect timing ;-) Kandice, shoot me a mail? :-)

Kandice said...

Yay!!! Marieke, I will email you shortly. This is going to sound stupid, but while I'm excited for me, I'm super disappointed for Marie. Sincerely.

Marie Rearden said...

You're a doll for thinking of me, Kandice. Congratulations! I'm super sad, but the process was fun. :)

Marieke, my offer from the 9:13 comment stands. If it doesn't happen, I understand. This entire campaign is a wonderful idea. Thanks for the opportunity!

Debra Driza said...

Wow, you guys are all amazing!!! HUGE THANKS to everyone who bid!!!

Kandice, congratulations, and I look forward to hearing from you soon! (also, how sweet are you to be disappointed on another bidder's behalf?) :D

Marie-I would be thrilled to take you up on your generous offer! I've emailed Taylor and I'll let you know her response asap.

Cheers,
Debra

Kandice said...

Thank you so much ladies! I am so freakin' excited. Times two!

This is one amazing opportunity and I'm so grateful to be a part of it.

My kids wanted to know why I slept with my laptop last night. :)

Marieke said...

Erm... YES!!! Important question first though - do you want your TARDIS with or without Timelord? ;)

Taylor, I already said so to Debra, but the both of you are absolutely fantastic too <3

Debra Driza said...

Thank you, Marieke, both for the lovely compliment and for working so hard to set up this entire Write Hope site in the first place! Such a wonderful thing you're doing here, and I'm honored to take part in it!

(also, do you even have to ask? OF COURSE I want my TARDIS with Timelord! You'll get on that, right? =D
